Protecting villagers from deadly mudslides- 2/17/2011

  • What are some natural factors causing mudslides in Guatemala? Some natural factors causing mudslides in Guatemala are hurricanes, frequent Earthquakes, and heavy rains (that make the soil extremely muddy)

  • What are some human factors causing mudslides in Guatemala? Deforestation, in Guatemala they are cutting down trees for firewood and more room for their crops. The trees act as a barrier against the mud, when there are less trees it is easier for the mud to travel down the hills.

  • What is being done to help reduce mudslides and mudslide damage? Anne Hallum, co-founder of the Alliance for International Reforestation, a nonprofit trying to help the villagers protect themselves from mudslides, is sending groups of people to spend up to five months learning how to properly plant trees on the hillsides and then actually planting them. Hallum explained that not all trees will help prevent mudslides but Pine trees planted on high mountain slopes can be most effective.
